“Stories of people helping each other, always home to humanity. We are made to respect the otherness of others, most of us do, a few don’t and we need to ask them to consider a new and sustainable source of happiness.” – Mike Ghouse

Rain, hailstorms and high velocity winds have disrupted activities at the ongoing Simhastha Kumbh fair in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, leaving lakhs of devotees scrambling for shelter and food.
In a praiseworthy gesture of communal harmony, a couple of local mosques have thrown their doors open to Hindu pilgrims, inviting them in to rest and take shelter from the stormy weather.1As squalls hit the region twice in a row last week, causing some deaths and damaging camps in the Mangalnath area, the All India Muslim Tehwar Committee chief Dr Ausaf Shahmiri Khurram asked members of the Muslim community to open their doors to Hindu devotees.
Hundreds of Hindu families, including women and children, took shelter at Hari Masjid in the Topkhana area, as well as in the Sodgiran mosque.
2At the nearby Shipra ghats too, some young Muslim boys are stationed to prevent pilgrims taking holy baths from slipping into the water. They have saved many devotees from drowning.
It is heart warming to see the Muslim and Hindu communities co-existing in peace and helping each other in unison at times of need.3
